Handling and Controlling Knowledge in Your Organization: Knows, Hows and Whys

What is knowledge management?
    It is a process of acquiring, creating and sharing knowledge in order to achieve the organizational objectives by making the best use of the knowledge.

How do you handle and control knowledge in your organization?
    Knowledge management involves creating value from an organization's intellectual assets through codifying what employees, suppliers, business partners, costumers know, and then sharing that information with the employees and even with other companies to device best practices.

Why do organizations need knowledge management?
    Knowledge should not be taken for granted by any organization. It is an asset to the organization more valuable than anything.  Knowledge should be passed on when talented and knowledgeable people leave the organization.  When the right people leave, right people with the right skills should take their place.   Incompetent replacements can undoubtedly create conflict and may destroy the talent supply chain.

        Hospitals can benefit from knowledge management.  Consultants share their knowledge to medical students and interns  during conventions and lectures to prepare them to become expert in the medical field and become efficient doctors someday.  A working environment that allows employees to feel comfortable sharing their hard-earned knowledge and experiences that make them esteemed to the organizations should be in place.  A plan for retiring team members should also be laid out to collect their knowledge and experiences.

        Health organizations or hospitals must continue to grow, evolve and innovate.  Implementing knowledge management projects can plant the seeds for innovation by encouraging the free flow of ideas among employees, partners and stakeholders.  Knowledge can come from the combination of evidence-based medical sources and patient records allowing access by the physician.  The physician can then efficiently care and treat patients. Using knowledge management can result to increased revenue, decrease in cost, creation of new products and services, and improvement in the delivery of services.
